Chemistry

Curriculum

At Key Stage 3, students cover topics including acids and alkalis, simple chemical reactions, the particle model, solutions, atoms and elements, compounds and mixtures, rocks and weathering and the reaction of metals and metal compounds.

At key stage 4, students study Chemistry as part of the AQA Science Double Award (IGCSE) or Triple Science (IGCSE)

At A level, students follow the Edexcel specification. Topics covered include Formulae, Bonding, Energetics Organic Chemistry, Transition metals, Redox, Rates of reaction and Analytical Methods of Analysis. This course provides an excellent platform for studying Medicine or Chemistry at degree level.

Co-Curricular Activities

Students can attend Chemistry problem solving sessions, Science Club and participate in the Chemistry Olympiad. A Level students have the opportunity to attend the Chemistry conference at The Institute of Education in London.

Departmental Achievements

In 2015, 38% of Chemistry students achieved A*-B grades at GCSE and 84% of students achieved A*-B grades at A Level.

Students have previously gained places to study Medicine at Cambridge University and Chemistry at The University of British Columbia, Vancouver and at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr Wheadon (Head of Chemistry) was nominated for a Pearson Teaching Award in 2011.
